Neues Paper: "Evaluation of advanced soil models for the cyclic soil-structure interaction of integral bridges" in "Acta Geotechnica"

23.07.2025

Integral bridges with longer spans show increased cyclic interaction with granular backfills due to seasonal temperature changes.
This paper investigates two advanced elastoplastic (DeltaSand, Sanisand-MS) and two hypoplastic (Hypo+IGS, Hypo+ISA) soil models, calibrated using extensive lab tests on a compacted gravel backfill. Model behaviour under cyclic loading is evaluated at element and structural level, including finite element simulations of soil-structure interaction. While all models show similar trends in earth pressure evolution, they differ significantly in predicted settlements. Notably, the hypoplastic models exhibit strong overshooting effects, which are analysed in detail. The study also finds that abutment deformation strongly affects passive stress mobilisation over seasonal cycles.
