The mechanical behaviour of fine-grained soils is influenced by inherent and induced anisotropy. This paper investigates the mechanical response of reconstituted kaolin through a comprehensive experimental programme including triaxial tests in compression and extension under different preloading conditions and sample cutting directions. The influence of sample orientation and preshearing history on stiffness and strength anisotropy is systematically analysed.
Numerical simulations using a modified Cam Clay model and an anisotropic visco-hypoplastic model reveal limitations in capturing inherent anisotropy. An extension of the latter model incorporating cross-anisotropic elastic stiffness is proposed, showing improved agreement with experimental observations.
